STOP THAT THIEF
NOTEBOOKS APPEAL TO LEGIONS of buyers because they're light, powerful, and
transportable. But that same appeal makes them easy prey for thieves. While
a stolen $2,000 notebook will earn only $200 for the thief, it can mean a loss
of valuable data for the victim of the theft.
Until now there hasn't been a method to secure a notebook to a desk without
the chain getting in the way, but MicroSaver from Kensington Microwave and
NoteGuardian from PC Guardian let you chain your notebook to a desk as you
would a bicycle to a pole.
They work by wrapping a metal cable around, say, a desk leg, then inserting
a metal fitting at the end of the cable into a special slot on the notebook
(no not a floppy disk slot). Both products use a slot built into the case
by the notebook manufacturer. When the lock is closed, the notebook is
secured to the desk.
If someone tries to steal it, they'll either be discouraged or they'll
destroy the notebook case in the process, making it practically worthless.
